What health & safety signage is mandatory?

Foley and Baugh - The Health & Safety People

What health & safety signage is mandatory? Requirements vary from industry to industry, from site to site. A survey by a professional H&S consultant is advised.

SME owners need to know exactly what health and safety signage they are legally required to display. There is no single checklist that applies to every workplace. The signs needed in one business may be very different from those required in another, because legal requirements depend on the hazards present, the layout of the premises and the activities being carried out.

Health & safety signs are used to communicate important information quickly and clearly. They can warn people about risks, direct them to safety equipment or emergency exits, and remind staff and visitors of rules that help keep everyone safe. In many cases, H&S signage becomes necessary where a risk cannot be completely removed by other control measures or where people need clear visual guidance.

Common examples include fire exit signs showing escape routes and final exits, fire action notices explaining what to do if an alarm sounds, and signs identifying the location of firefighting equipment such as extinguishers. First aid signs are often used to indicate where first aid boxes, eye wash stations or trained first aiders can be found. Depending on the workplace, warning signs may also be needed for hazards such as forklifts, slippery floors, electrical dangers, hazardous substances or restricted access areas. The list is long.

Mandatory safety signs can also include prohibition signs, such as no smoking notices or instructions preventing unauthorised entry, as well as mandatory instruction signs requiring specific actions. Examples might include wearing safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection or hard hats in designated areas.

However, displaying health & safety signs simply for the sake of it is rarely helpful. Too many unnecessary notices can cause important messages to be ignored. Effective health & safety signage will be relevant, clearly positioned, easy to understand and supported by wider health & safety arrangements such as training, supervision and risk assessments.

For SMEs, deciding what is genuinely required can be challenging, particularly when premises have changed over time or different hazards exist across departments. This is where professional guidance is invaluable. Health & safety consultants Foley and Baugh offer health & safety signage surveys to help clients identify what signs are necessary, where they should be located and whether existing signage remains relevant and compliant.

A well-planned health & safety signage system does more than meet legal duties. It helps create a safer, clearer and more confident working environment for employees, visitors and contractors alike.

Face Fit Testing

Foley and Baugh offer a full face fit testing service to businesses and individuals through East Anglia from our head office in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Face fit testing is critical process for assessing the seal of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) like face masks and respirators to a users face.

Face fit testing checks for gaps between a RPE and the user's face to ensure effective filtration of airborne contaminants. Through simulated exercises, any gaps in the seal are identified, enabling adjustments or recommending alternative respiratory protective equipment to maximise user protection. Repeat testing is a must for maintaining safety standards and protecting workers in hazardous environments across all industries.
