A mask that leaks is ineffective
When respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used, it needs to be able to provide adequate protection. A facepiece can’t protect the wearer if it leaks, and the typical cause of leaks is poor fit. A tight-fitting mask needs to fit the wearer’s face to be effective.

Since human beings come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, it’s unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE facepiece will fit everyone. Fit testing ensures that the equipment selected is suitable for the wearer.

What you need to do
Face fit testing should be carried out when individual users are given a choice of suitable models of respiratory protective equipment (RPE). And the make, model, type and size of facepiece that they wear when they have their successful fit test should subsequently be made available for their use. If you wear more than one type of tight-fitting facepiece, then each type should be fit tested and an adequate stock of each in the correct size should made available.

How you need to do it
RPE fit testing needs to be carried out by a competent person – a person who is appropriately trained, qualified and experienced.
