What are RAMS?

Foley and Baugh - The Health & Safety People

Norfolk health and safety consultants Foley and Baugh train clients throughout East Anglia to prepare RAMS and other work safety related documentation.

What are RAMS?
RAMS stands for Risk Assessment and Method Statement. This is a vital document in the field of health and safety, particularly within construction, engineering and other high-risk industries. In simple terms, RAMS outline what work is to be done, the risks involved and how those risks will be managed. While the risk assessment identifies potential hazards and evaluates the likelihood and potential severity of harm, the method statement details how the task will be carried out safely. Together, they form a framework for protecting workers and third parties and ensuring compliance with legal obligations.

The importance of RAMS cannot be overstated. They help employers meet their duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated regulations such as the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. By carefully assessing risks and clearly communicating safe systems of work, businesses not only reduce the likelihood of accidents and injury, but also demonstrate due diligence in the eyes of the law. This is particularly important when working with subcontractors or on larger projects where coordination between multiple parties is critical.

A well-prepared RAMS document will contain a clear description of the task or activity, the specific hazards associated with it, and who could potentially be harmed. It will include details of control measures to reduce risk, such as the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), training requirements, supervision levels, and emergency procedures. The method statement section will describe the step-by-step process for completing the task, including any equipment or materials used, access arrangements, and environmental considerations. RAMS should be site-specific and specific to the task to be carried out, and should not rely on generic document that may not reflect actual working conditions.

Ultimately, RAMS are more than just paperwork. When properly developed and communicated, they support a culture of safety, ensure everyone understands their responsibilities, and help projects run smoothly and efficiently. At Norfolk health and safety consultants Foley and Baugh we train clients across East Anglia to create clear, practical RAMS that protect workers and support compliance. Having well-written, meaningful RAMS in place is a crucial step in managing health and safety effectively.

Face Fit Testing

Foley and Baugh offer a full face fit testing service to businesses and individuals through East Anglia from our head office in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Face fit testing is critical process for assessing the seal of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) like face masks and respirators to a users face.

Face fit testing checks for gaps between a RPE and the user's face to ensure effective filtration of airborne contaminants. Through simulated exercises, any gaps in the seal are identified, enabling adjustments or recommending alternative respiratory protective equipment to maximise user protection. Repeat testing is a must for maintaining safety standards and protecting workers in hazardous environments across all industries.
