At Foley and Baugh, we help pool operators in Norfolk and across East Anglia understand and meet their obligations under health and safety legislation.
Operating a swimming pool comes with significant health and safety responsibilities. Whether you’re managing a leisure centre, school facility or private club, ensuring the wellbeing of employees, users and the wider public is a legal and moral duty.
The Health and Safety at Work Act (HSW) is the cornerstone of UK health and safety law. It places duties on employers, employees and even volunteers, requiring safe equipment, secure working environments and adequate training and supervision. Not only must you – as a swimming pool operator – protect staff, but you also have a duty to the public who may be affected by your operations.
Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR), pool operators must carry out regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards to both workers and pool users. Once identified, steps must be taken to control or eliminate those risks as far as reasonably practicable.
For example, chemical use in pools introduces specific risks, and this is where the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations come into play. Pool operators must assess risks from hazardous substances, such as chlorine, and implement control measures to prevent exposure, alongside routine monitoring and maintenance.
Accidents do happen, and when they do, pool operators must comply with the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR). Certain incidents, including serious injuries and chemical-related illnesses, must be reported to the relevant enforcing authority.
At Foley and Baugh, we offer expert consultancy and training tailored to the unique challenges of pool environments. From conducting risk assessments to COSHH training and RIDDOR compliance, we help ensure your pool is not only compliant but safe for all.
